r/Coffee on Reddit: Sun brewed coffee?

Is it possible to brew coffee in the sun as one would with sun tea? Is it advisable? Are there any recommended containers, techniques, etc. for this? If this is already a thing, what are the advantages/disadvantages vs other brewing methods?Like u/samethescott said, I don't think it would be that much different from cold brewing unless you made some sort of reflective/heat retaining box to place the brewing vessel in to bring it to a higher temp, even then I doubt you could reach an ideal temp between 195-205ish to brew quickly. However, sun drying is a pretty old school way to remove the green coffee beans from the coffee cherry & is still practiced in Ethiopia.A rather cheap setup for decent coffee. ... This summer, though, a digital solution has gained popularity in an extremely French instance of the old Apple slogan “there’s an app for that”: Jveuxdusoleil, an app that tracks the sun’s movement through the city’s maze of buildings to pinpoint exactly where you can claim a sunny spot on a terrace for your coffee.Jveuxdusoleil (‘I want sun’) taps into a key part of Parisian culture: drinks on the terrasse, as many fear the extinction of the bistroJean-Charles Levenne created Jveuxdusoleil (“I want sun”) in 2020 as a side project in an effort to teach himself app development and solve a personal problem: finding shade during hot days as well as sunny spots for the Parisian ritual of post-work drinks. This year, Jveuxdusoleil saw a peak of almost 20,000 visitors in just one week in early March after France experienced the darkest year in 30 years in 2024. Paris in particular endured multiple stretches of nearly a week at a time without a single ray of sunshine during the winter months.

From a mass production level, sun-grown coffee is faster growing and more prolific. It is the metaphorical rabbit of coffee (if you think of good ole Aesop’s fable “The Tortoise and The Hare.)For example, sun-grown coffee trees are typically productive for less than 15 years, while shade-grown coffee trees may yield fruit for 30 years or more.Toxic water runoff is the aftermath of treating new sun tolerant coffee bushes since they often require chemical fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides and fungicides. Finally, farmers have been encouraged to replace their traditional and supposedly inefficient farming methods with the higher yielding technique of sun cultivation, which has resulted in over 2.5 million acres of forest being cleared in Central America alone to make way for coffee farming in this way.

Long-term response of groundcover components to organic and conventional weed control in shaded and open-sun coffee in Nicaragua - ScienceDirect

The results of a long-term experiment in Masatepe, Nicaragua, comparing two intensities of organic and conventional coffee management under four combinations of deciduous and evergreen trees either leguminous (Inga laurina and Samanea saman) and non-leguminous (Simarouba glauca and Tabebuia rosea) and full sun concluded that with selective weed management under trees, soil is protected with both low-growing, shallow-rooted cover vegetation and tree leaf litter without yield loss, while also reducing herbicide and labor use.Over 11 years, treatments with trees compared to full sun coffee showed near absence of bare soil (P < .001) and increasing presence of leaf litter (P < .001) and cover vegetation (P < .001), especially in the first 8 years. Selective control, either herbicide or manual, resulted in minimal bare soil, a declining area covered by weeds and increased area, from 40 to 70%, under cover vegetation.Trees compared to full sun showed increased accumulation of whole leaf and fractionated leaf layers measured in the dry season with treatments including Inga laurina greater than other tree treatments. Labor and herbicide costs declined with increasing time under trees (P < .001), while selective control reduced herbicide use with higher labor costs. A regression of groundcover components on coffee berry yields explained less than 10% of variability. The authors concluded that farmers were 82% efficient, although factors of production were only treated quite generally with little mention of sustainability. Van Rikxoort et al. (2014) sampled 116 farms in coffee zones of Latin America in a gradient from traditional polyculture to full sun monoculture focusing not only on yield and efficiency, but also the carbon footprint and carbon stocks.

Sun Tea Recipe (Easy and Refreshing) | The Kitchn

Use cold filtered water and infuse the tea at room temperature instead of brewing the tea in the sun. Think of this sun tea as the tea-lover’s version of cold brewed coffee. Sun tea conjures up the charming memories of my grandmother’s tea pitcher on my grandparent’s screened-in porch. As kids we drank it over ice on the front steps, swatting away mosquitoes. My mother used to brew an unsweetened version of it on our tiny apartment balconies when I was a teenager.Learn how to make sun tea in a safe way and with a cold brew technique.Sun-brewing also puts that bacteria in what is called the “time-temperature danger zone.” This is culinary jargon for temperatures between 40°F and 140°F, which, when held for longer than two hours, allows bacteria to breed. While the true risk of brewing and drinking sun tea is relatively low, sun-brewed tea won’t actually yield the best-tasting cold iced tea at home, but there’s an easy solution to capture the taste and romance sun tea conjures.

Sun Brewed Coffee | The Heathen Homesteader

The heat is slowly coming to the PNW! A few days ago I put out the kids pool and started some lemonade and cold brewed coffee and fridge green tea. Then in a post of a group I admin a question about sun tea was brought up. We love sun tea in this house! Check… It got me wondering about about sun brewed coffee. I make a big batch of cold brewed coffee on my kitchen counter every few days. I also use a French press when it’s cool out to make hot coffee. Sun brewed was never something I considered until yesterday oddly enough. So I tried it. I used the ratios for my cold brewed coffee (link below) but set it in the sun for 2 hours. It’s not very hot here yet or I might have done an hour. I only made a two cup batch or else I would have left it longer as well. Further experimentation is in the works to see if longer brewing effects the flavor.I did everything the same as the link above except I had a smaller scale version of 2 cups water to 1/4 cup coffee. Then I shook it up and sat it in direct sunlight. I moved it once to keep in the light and away from neighbors pets. The heat is slowly coming to the PNW! A few days ago I put out the kids pool and started some lemonade and cold brewed coffee and fridge green tea. Then in a post of a group I admin a question abou…

Roasting coffee with the rays of the sun

Combining two of Italy's delights—coffee and sunshine—a couple of engineers in Rome have created an environmentally friendly way to roast coffee beans without electricity or gas. Electronics engineer Antonio Durbe sprays water to cool down the coffee grains at the end of the roasting cycle inside the world first solar-powered coffee roaster at his plant PuroSole in the outskirts of Rome, Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2021. Antonio Durbe and colleague Daniele Tummei have spent some six years to create the first solar-powered coffee roaster in the world, which uses a mirror system to convey sun light on the roasting chamber. The plant is run entirely by energy from the sun. Sunrays are concentrated by a set of mirrors on a coffee roaster and even the few electrical parts are powered by a small solar panel. Sensors controlled by a computer allow the mirrors to follow the sun throughout the day and focus its light on a rotating steel basket that contains the fresh coffee beans. The basket reaches peak temperatures of about 240-250 C (450-480 F), depending on the sun's brightness, and can roast the beans in 20 minutes. The process isn't only environmentally friendly and economically convenient. According to Durbe and Tummei, it also better preserves the coffee's aroma, giving it a richer flavor.Unlike conventional hot air ovens, which are typically gas-powered, the concentrated sunlight roasts the coffee without heating the air around it—by penetrating the grains in a more uniform way and without burning the exterior.

Living Well Eating Smart: Wake up with a cup of Sun (Coffee) - masslive.com

Locally owned out of Connecticut, Sun Coffee Roasters is leading the way when it comes to producing responsibly-sourced, high-quality coffee. Learn what makes this company different from the rest with this behind-the-scenes look into this fascinating industry. Coffee is truly a fascinating beverage and it’s something we had the opportunity to learn about during our Big Y Local Love filming at Sun Coffee Roasters in Plainville, Connecticut. Sun Coffee was started in 2008 by Keith Lemnios, when he had a realization that the coffee industry needed to change…So how does coffee go from field to cup? For Sun Coffee, it starts with partnering with family-owned micro-farms, meaning the farmers own a little over 2 acres of land. Coffee is technically the seed of the coffee cherry fruit (similar to the pit of a traditional cherry), which grows on coffee trees. These green coffee beans are ready for the roasting process. (Photo Credit: Andrea Luttrell) Once at Sun Coffee Roasters, the large burlap bags of green coffee beans are poured into a state-of-the-art roaster. The beans are carefully monitored to reach the right roast profile and then are released into a cooling tray to circulate with blowing air.Since traditional coffee grinders can scald the beans through heat and friction, Keith has invested in a unique water-cooled grinder so the beans remain at a lower temperature to protect quality and flavor. The coffee is then packed and shipped to stores so you get the freshest product possible – and Sun Coffee Roasters is a product you can certainly feel good about drinking.

Coffee Growing and Harvesting: Shade vs. Sun | CoffeeReview.com

Coffea arabica grows wild in the mountain rain forests of Ethiopia. Heavy rainfall can cause the trees to produce too much too fast and exhaust themselves; inadequate rain prevents the trees from flowering or bearing fruit. The tree requires some but not too much direct sunlight; two hours a day seems ideal. The lacy leaves of the upper levels of the rain forest originally shaded the coffee tree.In many parts of the world, including Central America, Mexico, Colombia, Ethiopia, and other regions, arabica coffee is traditionally grown in shade, which can range from dense thickets of native plants to careful, uniform plantings of imported shade trees. In other parts of the world — Hawaii, the Mandheling region of Sumatra, the Blue Mountain region of Jamaica, and many other places — coffee is not grown in shade because the weather is too rainy and wet and the trees need all the sun they can get.The tendency of growers in regions where shade growing is traditional to replace shade-grown coffee groves with new hybrid trees that grow well in sun and bear quickly and heavily is controversial, since these new fields of sun-grown coffee reduce diversity and require more artificial chemical inputs than shade-grown trees. In other places — Yemen, Brazil — coffee is traditionally grown in sun.
